For me, however, these are complaints I’ve heard levied against the similar Ecco the Dolphin time and time again, which to me remains a great game to this day. And others might not love such a short game. Some might not be on board for the offbeat tone. Some might not like the deliberately slow controls. I understand some of the complaints levied against Song of the Deep. A soothing, hypnotic score, and an Irish narrator who I kind of want to narrate my life from now on complement the visuals. Oh, and Merryn is downright adorable, ripped out of the cels of an 80’s anime like Mysterious Cities of Gold. Deep blues coalesce with translucent lights steampunk machinery lives alongside hulking sea beasts. Song of the Deep may not have raw graphical horsepower, but it has a mesmerizing art direction that sticks with you. While the core gameplay is fun and deceptively complex, and blasting open doors with bombs and timing current rides are memorable, what really sold me was the aesthetic.
